Stem confusion

Harvard denied involvement in tissue transplants from stem cells

<url>On Wednesday, Harvard University and the associated Massachusetts General Hospital announced that they did not allow transplant operations for patients of tissues grown from artificial multifunctional (it should be read "induced pluripotent" – VM) stem cells of non-embryonic origin, which were previously announced by researcher Hisashi Moriguchi.

The university said in a statement that the Japanese was a visiting researcher at the hospital in 1999-2000, but since then has no longer been related to this medical institution or Harvard, ITAR-TASS reports.

Hisashi Moriguchi himself, in an interview with the Kyodo news agency, assures that he received a sanction for his operations from the Ethics Committee of Harvard University. Against the background of this confusion, the presentation of the achievements of this researcher, which was scheduled at one of the American scientific societies, was canceled on Thursday.

Hisashi Moriguchi told a number of Tokyo media outlets that back in February he performed the first transplant operation of tissues grown from induced stem cells. His 34-year-old patient, it was claimed, had almost completely failed his heart after an earlier liver transplant. To restore his functions, the patient, Moriguchi said, had heart muscle tissues transplanted (perhaps, after all, not tissue flaps, but cardiomyocytes, into which cells isolated from the liver were differentiated? – VM). They were allegedly grown from induced stem cells obtained from the cell mass of the patient's removed liver. The operation allegedly went well, and the patient, according to these data, has already been discharged from the hospital and returned to normal life. After that, Moriguchi said, he transplanted five more patients with heart muscle tissue, also grown from induced stem cells.

Currently, Moriguchi has the status of a special researcher at the University of Tokyo Hospital.
