Supplement to the Law

The State Duma classifies genetic data as personal

The bill on the expansion of personal data due to information about genes was adopted by the State Duma in the first reading, the correspondent of IA REGNUM reports.

It is proposed to supplement the composition of biometric personal data of a person, which can be processed only with his written consent, providing that such data includes not only information that characterizes the physiological and biological characteristics of a person, but also information that characterizes his genetic characteristics.

The bill will eliminate a legislative gap in terms of protecting information about a person obtained from his biomaterial and reflecting genetically significant information about him – data on health status, lifestyle, behavioral characteristics, sensitivity to drugs and allergens, and other individual characteristics, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin explained.

In its current form, the law "On Personal Data" allows for the uncontrolled collection and transfer of genetic data without the knowledge and consideration of a person's will.

During the discussion, parliamentarians spoke about the need to take tougher measures of responsibility for "leaks" of genetic data.
