Giving way to elderly people in transport, we actually harm their health, according to a group of British scientists led by orthopedic surgeon Skartelt McNally.

She and her colleagues published a study in the British Medical Journal on the relationship between physical activity and social security for the elderly.

Scientists urge to distinguish between the effects of aging and lack of physical activity and note that older people are quite capable of "getting younger" for ten years with the help of constant exercise.

"We need to encourage activity as we age, not encourage people to rest," said McNally's colleague, Professor Muir Gray. – And think carefully before giving up a seat on a bus or train to an elderly person. Standing is a great exercise for them."

"A lot of diseases in the elderly are not related to age, but to lack of activity. The more we exercise, the better," McNally herself noted.

According to her, even elderly people sent to hospital for treatment should try to find time for squats or walks along the corridors.

Manelli and her colleagues also noted that society needs to change so that middle-aged and older people have more opportunities for active recreation.

However, they say that "they" on their own initiative, it is not accepted to give up a place to the elderly: they can take offense... – VM.
