The Internal Security Service of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia found violations committed during the execution of the state contract for the purchase of kits for collecting genomic information from convicts and handed over the materials to the investigative authorities to resolve the issue of initiating a criminal case, the official representative of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia Kristina Belousova told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

Genomic registration of convicted persons for particularly grave and serious crimes, as well as for crimes against sexual inviolability and sexual freedom of the individual is carried out in Russia in accordance with the federal law "On State Genomic Registration in the Russian Federation". As the deputy director of the Federal Penitentiary Service Nikolay Kolesnik reported in June 2013, at that time about 17 thousand DNA samples had already been collected, about 200 thousand sets for collecting genomic information had been purchased, another 198,000 sets were planned to be purchased this year.

"The FSIN's own security Service, by order of the director of the department, Gennady Kornienko, checked the conditions of public procurement of kits for collecting genomic information of convicts and revealed violations. All the information was transferred to the investigative authorities to make a decision on the initiation of a criminal case," the agency interlocutor said.
