The Government has approved the State biotechnology program for 2013, designed with the help of state support to dramatically increase its economic impact on the food industry and biomedicine.

Within four years, the state will finance research and development work and entrepreneurship in the field of biotechnology in the amount of over 0.5 billion rubles. crowns.

The most promising areas of biotechnology development are recognized on the basis of the research conducted by the international consulting firm Ernst & Young in Estonia, the production of health-improving food products, the development of food technologies, medical diagnostics and the development of preventive therapeutic agents.

According to Tauno Olju, the head of the research project, the level of enterprises and science in Estonia is sometimes very impressive: "In many areas, our scientists and biotechnological enterprises are at the highest global level. The widespread use of this potential in traditional industrial sectors, such as food, for example, would create excellent prerequisites for development and increased exports."

The emphasis on supporting biotechnology has also changed. Previously, modern laboratories were created and equipment was purchased, but now the focus of the program is more market-oriented activities, such as product development in the food industry or the search for export markets and marketing channels in the field of biomedicine.

One of the goals of the program is also the wider introduction of existing biotechnologies in the traditional industries of Estonia, which will be reflected in the support of the import of technologies used in the world.
