The most expensive American diseases

The Agency for Health System Research has published a list of diseases that are most expensive to treat in the United States.

The list of the 10 most expensive ailments was created based on 2005 statistics. The calculation took into account the number of visits to the doctor, the number of hospital visits, the number of ambulance calls, the duration of hospitalization, the cost of medicines, etc.

The "top ten" includes: cardiovascular diseases (costing the US economy $76 billion annually), injuries (respectively, $72 billion), cancer ($70 billion), mental illnesses, including depression ($56 billion), asthma ($54 billion), hypertension ($42 billion), type II diabetes (insulin-independent) and joint diseases ($34 billion each), back problems and childbirth ($32 billion each).
