The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC) announced the detection of the first case of bacterial infection in the country that cannot be treated with any existing antibiotic, Reuters reports (U.S. sees the first case of bacteria resistant to last-resort antibiotic).

The head of the CDC, Thomas Frieden, said that a drug-resistant bacterium was detected in a 49-year-old patient with an infectious urinary tract disease. Frieden stressed that the patient had not left the country for 5 months. The woman applied for medical help on April 26, 2016.

A report on the detection of drug-resistant infection was published by American doctors in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (McGann et al., Escherichia coli Harboring mcr-1 and blaCTX-M on a Novel IncF Plasmid: First report of mcr-1 in the USA). The article says that the bacterium Escherichia coli (Escherichia coli) has been found to have plasmids (extra-chromosomal ring DNA) containing resistance genes to the currently most effective antibiotic colistin.

Bacteria with the mcr-1 gene, which determines resistance to colistin, are extremely rare. So far, only one-time cases of colistin-resistant infection are known in China, the UK and Italy.

Studies of the found bacteria will be continued in order to determine the probability of the spread of resistance. In particular, American doctors intend to establish the circumstances of the patient's infection.
