The Russian Ministry of Defense has selected volunteers among military personnel to test the coronavirus vaccine. This was reported to journalists on Tuesday in the department.

"To test the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, 50 servicemen were selected, including five women who voluntarily expressed a desire to take part in the testing of a modern drug. All candidates have passed a preliminary examination and testing, they have not been diagnosed with any diseases for a month," the ministry said.

The ministry clarified that the military was selected from various units throughout Russia. On June 3, the first group should arrive at a special institution at the 48th Central Research Institute of the Russian Defense Ministry "to undergo a preliminary in-depth medical examination and prepare for the experiment," the ministry added.

Earlier, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin that the Central Research Institute of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces, together with the N.F. Gamalei National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, are developing a vaccine against coronavirus. According to him, preclinical studies were supposed to be completed by June 1, and clinical studies – by the end of July.

Clinical trials of the vaccine will be conducted on the basis of the 48th Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense, where vaccines against Ebola and Middle East respiratory symptom (MERS), as well as a universal flu vaccine have already been studied and successfully tested.
