Japan plans to create a medical supercomputer with an artificial intelligence system, the capabilities of which will exceed the capabilities of IBM Watson

"Dear Dr. Watson, We hasten to inform you that you will have a Japanese brother very soon." This "brother" will be an artificial intelligence system based on a new supercomputer, which is currently being developed by specialists from Kyoto University and Fujitsu Ltd. And this system will be designed, first of all, to conduct a more accurate diagnosis of the patient's health and calculations of personalized methods of treatment of identified diseases that will have maximum effectiveness in each case.

By creating a new artificial intelligence system, the Japanese plan to compete with the IBM Watson supercomputer, which has repeatedly demonstrated its capabilities in the field of medicine. For reference, we note that the Watson supercomputer was not named after the partner of the famous Sherlock Holmes, it was so named in memory of Thomas John Watson, the founder and first head of IBM.

The new Japanese system will carry out preliminary diagnostics of the state of health by analyzing the genetic code of the patient. In order to make a correlation between certain types of diseases and even the most insignificant genetic mutations detected during the analysis, the supercomputer will rely on an extensive database compiled by indexing information obtained from international medical databases and all other available sources.

This work is part of a more global project being implemented by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, an organization that has been collecting data on the genetic code, genetic mutations and their connection with diseases for quite a long time. And, according to the plan, the Japanese equivalent of Watson-a should enter service by the end of 2020.
