South Korean cloning specialist Hwang Woo-suk faces four years in prison, AP reports.

A former employee of the National University of Seoul (Seoul National University) is accused of misuse of public funds, as well as of falsifying the results of cloning experiments.

The trial of Hwang Woo-seok has been going on since 2006. At the next court session, which took place on August 24, the prosecution demanded four years of imprisonment for Professor Hwang Woo-seok.

According to the prosecutor, the scientist's activities cast a shadow on the image of South Korea. The state Prosecutor added that this case is an attempt to resolve the problems that have accumulated in Korean science.

Hwang Woo-seok asked the judge for leniency, saying that if acquitted, he was ready to spend his remaining strength on scientific research. The court will make the final decision on the case of the South Korean scientist at a meeting to be held on October 19.

Hwang Woo-seok became widely known in 2004 after claims that a group of researchers led by him managed to successfully clone human embryonic stem cells for the first time in the world. Then the South Korean scientist announced the first successful experience in cloning a dog.
In December 2005, the secretary of the commission to investigate the activities of the laboratory, Hwang Woo-seok, stated that all human stem cell colonies allegedly obtained by the scientist turned out to be fake. On January 11, 2006, the South Korean government stripped Hwang Woo-seok of the official title of "outstanding scientist". The next day after that, the scientist apologized to the public for publishing incorrect information about his research.
