Treat Crohn's disease with stem cells!

Treatment of Crohn's disease with stem cells promises to be effective
Elvira Koshkina, CompulentaCelgene Pharmaceutical Corporation called promising the results of the first stage of trials of an experimental method of stem cell treatment of patients with Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease (granulomatous enteritis, regional enteritis, transmural ileitis, terminal ileitis) is a chronic nonspecific granulomatous inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which can affect all its departments, starting from the oral cavity and ending with the rectum. It affects all layers of the digestive tube, is characterized by inflammation, lymphadenitis, ulceration and scarring of the intestinal wall.

Testing of the experimental PDA-001 technology was carried out on 12 patients; all of them were injected with stem cells derived from human placental tissues. At the second stage, the tests will be more extensive.

All participants suffering from Crohn's disease to varying degrees had previously been treated for the disease by traditional methods, but without success. During the experiment, they were injected with stem cells twice with an interval of one week. Six received cells in small doses, the rest – in large doses. As a result, the patients showed signs of clinical improvements, including remissions in four patients from the group who were injected with cells in small doses. Celgene scientists cannot yet explain why a small concentration of stem cells turned out to be more effective.
