Waiting list for a head transplant

Canavero: the name of the first candidate for a head transplant in China has been named

RIA News

The first candidate for a head transplant in China will be a 62-year-old pensioner named Wang Huanming, who was paralyzed in an accident while playing sports, the New York Times newspaper reports.

"The New York Times article contains only one correct thing – the name of the person who agreed to take part in the body transplant operation. Everything else contains a lot of mistakes and is based on old information that has been around for almost a year," commented neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero, whose words are conveyed by Valery Spiridonov, who is to become the first patient.

According to the NYT, Ren Xiaoping from Harbin Medical University (China), a colleague and like-minded Kanavero, told about the upcoming head transplant operation that Wang Huanming will undergo in the near future.

"Today we have the name of a Chinese candidate for a transplant experiment. This means that the technology receives international support and its demand is obvious. I am optimistic about the joining participants and I am sure that all technical difficulties will be solved soon," Valery Spiridonov said, commenting on the situation to RIA Novosti.

This operation will be carried out using the same procedure and technology for splicing nerve fibers, which Kanavero and Xiaoping are developing for the head transplant of Russian engineer Valery Spiridonov, who was the first to volunteer for such an operation last year. A 30-year-old man suffers from Werding-Hoffman disease. Because of her, he is confined to a wheelchair.

Doctors and scientists interviewed by the New York Times note that such a procedure is not feasible from a medical point of view and that it has a lot of ethical problems, especially considering that it is carried out on the territory of the PRC.
