NovaMedica begins clinical trials of a drug that has no analogues in the world
The Russian pharmaceutical company NovaMedica has received permission from the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation to conduct a phase I clinical trial of a new drug – gel for the treatment and relief of hemorrhoid symptoms. This is the first product of the company's own development (NLN research code). The drug is based on a unique mechanism of action that is not used in the products currently on the market. Thanks to the use of nanotechnology, the developers of NovaMedica managed to achieve multiple improvements in the physico-chemical characteristics of the active substances of the drug. As a result, already at the stage of preclinical studies, the product showed a high dose–dependent anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effect - up to 400% advantage over the control groups of animals receiving the comparison drug. In addition, with the help of nanotechnology, a new combinatorial solution has been found for this therapeutic area. It made it possible for the first time in the world to combine previously incompatible active substances that have both therapeutic and analgesic effects in the form of a non-fat-based gel, which provides convenience of its use and a long shelf life.
"Our first product of our own development has become truly innovative, this is confirmed by four patent applications filed, including international ones. Foreign investors are already showing interest in it," said Mikhail Getman, Vice President of Pharmaceutical Operations at NovaMedica. – We believe that the drug has prospects for successful withdrawal to both Russian and foreign markets. The global market of products and technologies for the treatment of hemorrhoids, according to expert estimates, is about 10 billion US dollars per year, including the market of medicines – about 1.5-2 billion dollars, and up to 8 billion dollars – the volume of surgical operations for this indication.
