The winner of the RUSNANOPRIZE 2016 prize in medicine, pharmacology and biotechnology was Chad Alexander Mirkin, professor at Northwestern University of Illinois, the creator of "spherical nucleic acids", which are the basis of a series of breakthrough developments in the field of nanomedicine and high-tech medical screening.

Traditionally, RUSNANO presents the RUSNANOPRIZE Prize within the framework of the Open Innovations Forum. In 2016, the prize was awarded in the category "Medicine, Pharmacology and biotechnology". An important feature of the award is that it is awarded simultaneously for outstanding research in the field of nanotechnology and nanomaterials, and for the introduction of the developed technology into production with a capitalization of at least 10 million US dollars. Thus, the extreme importance of the practical application of high-tech developments and close cooperation between academic institutions and business is emphasized.

2016 Laureate – Professor at Northwestern University (Northwestern University, Illinois, USA) Chad Mirkin fully embodies the ideas of the RUSNANOPRIZE prize. He is not only one of the most highly cited chemists in the world (h-index: 126 according to Scopus and 150 according to Google Scholar), but also the founder of a number of successful companies, including the winner of the RUSNANOPRIZE 2016 - Nanosphere, Inc.

Spherical nucleic acids are three-dimensional biomolecular nanoobjects, first synthesized by Professor Mirkin's group in 1996. To date, they have formed the basis of fundamentally new systems of biomedical diagnostics, targeted drug delivery, regulation of gene expression and immunomodulation, which already allow minimally invasive treatment of a number of malignant tumors.
