Delayed with the birth of a child – think about a donor egg

IVF has caught up with the effectiveness of natural conception

ABC MagazineScientists from the University of Michigan (Success of fertility treatment may approach natural birth rate) presented interesting information for women thinking about the birth of a child.

According to the results of their research, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology in which an egg is extracted from a woman's body and fertilized in vitro, after which the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterine cavity for further development – in terms of efficiency is not inferior to natural fertilization.

According to the results of the analysis of data from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology), collected through the reporting system on the results of the clinics, 57 percent of almost 250 thousand women who underwent such an operation from 2004 to 2009 were able to give birth to a child after transplanting a fertilized egg.

With age, the probability of a successful pregnancy decreased, but the use of donor eggs compensated for this factor. In addition to the recipient's age, the quality of the embryo influenced the success of the outcome.

According to the researchers, these indicators are comparable to the natural frequency of conception in the population. For an individual woman who lives a regular sex life and does not use contraception, the probability of conception is 45.65 and 85 percent, respectively, within 3, 6 and 12 months. In addition, their analysis made it possible to determine the age limit at which the transition to donor eggs guaranteed a significant increase in the chances of a successful birth of a child – 38 years.

Scientists remind us whether or not to use donor eggs is a personal choice of every woman. However, they hope that the statistics they have obtained will help infertility sufferers better understand the risks and effectiveness of such an operation.
