Doping for lazy people

A new drug can be a substitute for sports

DailyTechInfo based on Gizmag materials: New drug mimics the beneficial effects of exerciseA new drug known as SR9009, which is currently being developed by researchers from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), increases the level of metabolic activity in muscle tissues, at least, as studies have shown, in experimental rodents.

These rodents become lean, they increase the volume and strength of muscles, they become able to run longer distances and other effects appear, which under normal conditions are the result of intensive and systematic sports exercises. If such an effect from the effects of the drug SR9009 manifests itself in humans, then he, this drug, will become a panacea for overweight, metabolic disorder syndromes and, possibly, certain types of diabetes.

The drug SR9009, which has a fairly simple formula and the structure of the molecule, was developed by Thomas Burris, a professor from the TSRI Institute, who was looking for medicinal methods to combat excess weight. The drug SR9009 binds and activates a protein called Rev-ErbAa, which affects the processes of fat and sugar burning, liver function, the production of new fat cells and inflammatory reactions of living organisms.

Previous studies conducted on rodents have shown that animals whose bodies lack the Rev-ErbAa protein show a decrease in muscle mass, a decrease in the rate of metabolic processes and a decrease in the ability to withstand physical exertion. Such animals, due to their genetic characteristics, were doomed to be sluggish and weakly active. But when scientists started injecting the drug SR9009 to these animals to activate the Rev-ErbAa protein in their body, the results exceeded all expectations. The metabolic rate in muscle tissues increased significantly, and although these animals were artificially limited in the possibilities of movement and training, they turned out to be able to run distances one and a half to two times the distance they could overcome earlier.

"Under the influence of the drug SR9009, experimental animals get musculature, like a well–trained athlete," says Professor Tom Burris. - "If our drug has the same effect on people, then people who, for various reasons, are deprived of the opportunity to train and play sports can get a good opportunity to live a more fulfilling life."

If subsequent trials of the drug SR9009 on humans, which will begin in the near future, show its effectiveness, then people suffering from overweight and concomitant diseases, from aging, from severe forms of arthritis, from heart failure and from other diseases that limit people's ability to exercise, will have a good opportunity to get rid of these diseases and start leading a full healthy life.
