Not just caffeine

A new useful property of coffee has been discovered

RIA News

American scientists from Rutgers University have found out that one of the substances contained in coffee, together with caffeine, can contribute to the effective fight against Parkinson's disease and dementia with Levi's corpuscles. (Article by Yan et al. Synergistic neuroprotection by coffee components eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide and caffeine in models of Parkinson's disease and DLB is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences – VM.)

Thus, coffee beans contain eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide (Eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide, EHT), a serotonin derivative.

A new study has shown that it is the combination of EHT and caffeine that can prevent the accumulation of dangerous proteins in the brain. Therefore, drinking coffee can slow down or stop the progression of brain diseases.

It is noted that individually these substances do not have a positive effect on the fight against these disorders.

In the future, scientists will have to determine the correct ratio of EHT and caffeine needed for a therapeutic effect.

"EHT is found in various types of coffee, but its amount varies. It is important to determine the right amount and ratio so that people do not abuse caffeine, because this entails negative health consequences," said lead author of the study Maral Muradyan (in a press release Rutgers University Two Compounds in Coffee May Team Up to Fight Parkinson's – VM).

Parkinson's disease is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. Patients have impaired mental processes, regulation of movements and muscle tone, as well as general inhibition.

Dementia with Lewy bodies is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by symptoms of parkinsonism, cognitive decline, psychotic disorders, as well as autonomic dysfunction. Like Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies most often begins in old age.
