Progress in stroke treatment?

A new remedy for eliminating brain damage caused by stroke has been proposed

sci-lib based on ScienceDaily: Substance naturally found in humans effective in fighting brain damage from strokeThe substance, which is normally produced in the human body and rats, as it turned out, largely eliminates brain damage resulting from an acute stroke, contributing to the restoration of normal organ function.

This conclusion was reached by scientists from the Henry Ford Hospital.

The results obtained by specialists show that the AcSDKP peptide provides protection of the nervous system when injected into the body 1-4 hours after the occurrence of an ischemic stroke.

This type of stroke occurs when a blood clot clogs the arteries that feed the brain. As a result of its development, the right amount of oxygen is no longer supplied to the brain tissues, which can lead to a fatal outcome.

"Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Our results showed that treatment of acute stroke with AcSDKP alone or a combination of this peptide with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) significantly eliminated neurovascular damage and improved neurological outcome," says Li Zhang, lead author of the study.

Tissue plasminogen Activator (tPA), commonly referred to as a clot hunter, is the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of acute stroke. However, tPA should be applied as soon as possible after the occurrence of a stroke in order to get the most positive result. Its disadvantage is that it increases the likelihood of intracerebral hemorrhage.

Research by employees of the Henry Ford Hospital shows that the time from the onset of a stroke to the administration of the drug can be increased to 4 hours. At the same time, the introduction of tPA together with AcSDKP enhances the effectiveness of the tissue plasminogen activator. Scientists have also found that the AcSDKP peptide itself is an effective means of combating stroke if administered within the first hour after the onset of pathology.

Scientists tested the effect of both substances on laboratory rats, which caused the development of stroke. AcSDKP peptide has been known to have an anti-inflammatory effect and helps protect the heart when used to eliminate various diseases of the cardiovascular system. It is also important that, as it turned out, AcSDKP can easily pass through the blood-brain barrier.

It is important to note that scientists have found that the combined use of AcSDKP and tPA contributes to the restoration of normal brain function without increasing the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage and the formation of additional blood clots.
