Rhinovirus vaccine

Is it possible to get vaccinated against colds?

Mednovosti based on the materials of MedicalDaily: Will Scientists Develop A Common Cold Vaccine?

Flu vaccination has been known for quite a long time – flu vaccination has become the most common thing for us. Scientists, doctors and patients argue about its effectiveness and necessity, but, nevertheless, such a vaccination exists and is actively used.

Scientists from the Medical School at Emory University (Emory University School of Medicine) believe that a vaccine may soon appear that protects against rhinoviruses, which are the cause of the common cold.

They have already tested such a vaccine on cell cultures and found out that it provokes the development of an immune response and the formation of antiviral antibodies.

Martin Moore, one of the members of the research team, noted that it seems surprising to him that no one has attempted to create such a vaccine in the last 50 years. The authors made a combined vaccine containing fragments of many rhinovirus strains. According to scientists, the introduction of such a vaccine will lead to the formation of immunity against various rhinoviruses.

The developers plan to receive support for further research from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. In the future, they hope to start producing a vaccine that protects against colds.

The authors note that rhinoviruses do not have as much variability as influenza viruses, and therefore the cold vaccine will not have to be modified every year – it will be effective for several seasons.
