An effective cure for resistant skin cancer has been found

Melanoma is considered the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Today, the five-year survival rate in the last stages is less than 50%, and treatment is complicated by the resistance of malignant cells to treatment. American researchers from The University of Oregon focused specifically on the problem of resistance to therapy and found an effective drug that has already been approved for the treatment of people.
The team tested almost nine thousand compounds on resistant melanoma cells and identified potential candidates. They turned out to be two structurally similar substances – deguelin and rotenone. Both compounds are natural pesticides and have been shown to be effective for affecting the metabolism of cancer cells.
Continuing to work with deguelin, scientists found that the substance inhibits the consumption of oxygen by mitochondria, which leads to the depletion of cancer cells.

"Deguelin is already known as a treatment for other types of cancer, but its effectiveness for metastatic resistant melanoma has not yet been proven," explained one of the authors of the study, Arup Indra.
