Cellular technologies in Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk scientists are working on the cultivation of "artificial skin"

Ulyanovsk scientists have started implementing a project to grow "artificial leather", the press service of the Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical University told RIA Novosti.

"Scientists of the Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical University have begun work on the cultivation of skin cells. It is planned that the initial product of "artificial leather" will be received this year. The first cellular product to be obtained is human skin fibroblasts and stem cells, in the future – liver cells," the press center said.

The university staff is engaged in the development of the center for fundamental and applied problems of bioecology and biotechnology, which opened in February 2015. Scientists will grow skin cells, stem cells – as a product for medical institutions, materials for various medical operations.

The center plans to use the obtained cellular products in clinics for more effective treatment of burns, ulcers, mechanical injuries of the skin, in cosmetology, in pharmaceutical enterprises as test systems. They will be supplied to hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and other biomedical institutions.

Methods of cultivation and controlled specialization of human cells make it possible to construct multicellular structures outside the body that are analogs of tissues and organs. The biomaterial will be created using the patient's "native" skin cells.

"It is difficult to get the full equivalent of human skin right away. Therefore, we have divided the stages of implementation of this direction into initial and prospective. Currently, we are starting with such a cellular product as human skin fibroblasts," the press service quotes the words of the director of the research center, Professor Elena Antonova.

According to her, "this is a fairly common product that is widely used in the treatment of various skin lesions, in cosmetology, and also serves as a model in various scientific studies."

Antonova added that in the near future – the production of a more complex multi-layered cellular product, which is often called the equivalent of skin, or "artificial skin". This stage of work will be carried out jointly with the Research Institute of Cytology of St. Petersburg next year.
