Scientists have refuted the fake in experiments with "acidic" cells
At the end of January, a group of scientists from the United States and Japan, led by 30-year-old Obokata, published an article in the journal Nature in which they claimed that it was possible to turn ordinary cells into stem cells without interfering with their genetic code by exposing them to acid. It became a sensation in the scientific world. However, immediately after the article appeared, a number of scientists drew attention to some inaccuracies in the study. No scientist has managed to repeat the results of Obokat and her colleagues so far.
The RIKEN Institute has appointed its own investigation, as a result of which it came to the conclusion that the research data contains forgeries and inaccuracies. At the same time, today scientists find it difficult to give an unambiguous answer about whether the creation and existence of STAP cells is possible.
"The fact that I have repeatedly managed to verify the creation of STAP cells is true. I managed to create them more than 200 times (in this way)," Obokata said.
Obokata appeared in front of journalists for the first time since January, when the article was published. She stated that she did not agree with the statement of the RIKEN Institute, since its research was incomplete and the results were premature.
The researcher demanded to re-examine the discovery, admitting that there were a number of inaccuracies and overlays in the published data and photographs, which were caused by her inexperience, and were not deliberate forgery. She also stated that she was not going to withdraw the article from Nature, as this could cast doubt on the very existence of STAP cells.
