A genetically modified probiotic will help you lose weight

The mice got a great figure back

As the incidence of obesity increases, the number of cases of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other serious diseases also increases. The predisposition of the body to the development of these diseases is influenced by intestinal bacteria. Consequently, changes in the gut microbial population can prevent or reverse the disease.

According to data published in an article in the Journal of Clinical Investigation (Chen et al., Incorporation of therapeutically modified bacteria into gut microbiota inhibits obesity), modified bacteria are able to prevent the development of obesity in mice and even reverse it. Sean Davies and his colleagues from Vanderbilt University have created E. coli bacteria that produce the chemical compound NAPE (N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine). N-acylphosphatidylethanolamines are precursors of N–acylethanolamides (N-acylethanolamides), a family of lipids synthesized in the small intestine in response to food intake. Thus, the brain receives such a signal that the animal stops eating.

In mice that received high-fat food and NAPE-synthesizing bacteria with drinking water for 8 weeks, the level of obesity and the severity of symptoms associated with it, in particular insulin resistance, decreased. The protective effect of NAPE-synthesizing bacteria was observed for 4 weeks after the termination of the experiment.

The graph from the article in J Clin Invest shows black weight gain in mice from the control group who were given clean water, blue – from the second control group who received water with E. coli treated with an empty vector that does not carry any additional genes, and red – in mice who received water with NAPE-synthesizing bacteria – VM.These results show that the introduction of appropriately modified bacteria into the intestinal microbiota can become an effective strategy for suppressing the development of metabolic disorders.
