Scientists have discovered a miracle vitamin: less excitement!

New miracle vitamin protects against obesity and increases endurance

Kirill Stasevich, Compulenta(With the notes of a Healthy Skeptic)

With the help of the vitamin contained in milk, it is possible to control the work of mitochondria so as to live without obesity, diabetes and in excellent physical shape.

Researchers from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (Switzerland) report on the amazing properties of nicotinamide riboside, which can be found in a variety of products, from milk to beer. This modification of vitamin nicotinamide has been known for a long time, there is evidence that it affects the activity of mitochondria. But no one has undertaken more detailed studies concerning this substance.

Really? And how to understand such a phrase (in the literary, but not distorting the meaning of the translation from a foreign article by Belenky et al. "NAD+ metabolism in health and disease", Trends Biochem Sci. 2007. Epub 2006 Dec)?
Nicotinamide riboside [in our opinion, the word order in such cases is directly opposite to the American one], the recently discovered nucleoside precursor of NAD+ in eukaryotic systems, as a drug that raises the level of NAD+, has a number of advantages compared to traditional therapies, because it, unlike high doses of nicotinamide [aka – nicotinic acid, niacin, vitamin PP or B3], does not disrupt the work of sirtuins and does not cause other undesirable side effects.
Or the title of J.M.Denu's article "Vitamins and aging: pathways to NAD+ synthesis" (Cell, 2007 May)? True, this work is done by leaps and bounds, but Dr. Brenner, the head of the above-mentioned work, Comrade. Belenky, and a dozen more studies of nicotinamide riboside, has no doubt about this for ten years, since he began writing an article for Cell magazine (2004): "Discoveries of nicotinamide riboside as a nutrient and conserved NRK genes establish a Preiss-Handler independent route to NAD+ in fungi and humans".
And in general, over the past 10 years or so, this new miracle vitamin has been studied inside and out. So the work of Swiss scientists is not a sensation, but at best the first (and maybe the next – it's too lazy to look, and so everything is clear) confirmation of the known influence of a known substance on mammals.

In an article published in the journal Cell Metabolism, the Swiss describe the beneficial effects that nicotinamide riboside showed in mice. Firstly, animals that were kept on fatty foods weighed 60% less if this substance was mixed into their food. Moreover, riboside protected against diabetes, which developed in mice with obesity. And even in animals that were on a normal, non-fatty diet, the drug increased the sensitivity of tissues to insulin. Secondly, the substance increases muscle strength: animals that received riboside became more resilient and generally acquired better physical shape. Thirdly, after eight weeks of taking nicotinamide riboside, thermoregulation improved in animals.

All this, according to scientists, is due to the effect of riboside on mitochondria. Many metabolic pathways converge on mitochondria, and the rate of fat breakdown and the level of oxidative stress depend on them. Those who learn how to control mitochondria will receive the key to a "long and happy life," and researchers around the world are trying to find means that would affect these organelles in the right way.

Perhaps nicotinamide riboside will become one of the favorites – the authors of the work believe that it can also be used to prolong life; in any case, this is indicated by the results of some experiments conducted on nematodes. As for the biochemical details, riboside increases the level of NAD, one of the most important coenzymes in energy production reactions. It also stimulates the activity of sirtuins, enzymes that are involved in the regulation of mitochondria and which many call longevity molecules.

In favor of the new miracle vitamin, it also says that it seems to have no side effects. The researchers raised the dose of riboside 10 times higher than that required for therapeutic action, and no negative symptoms occurred in the mice. Probably, the cells turn to it as needed, and the excess amounts are simply stored without undergoing any dangerous transformations.

But there is one problem associated with riboside, and this problem is purely technical. It is very difficult to synthesize, and there is extremely little of it in natural products. It is known that it is contained in milk, but it is still not possible to determine the concentration of riboside in milk. The same is true with other products – most likely, it is there, but in what quantities?

In general, we drink milk and hope that scientists will be able to synthesize nicotinamide riboside quickly and cheaply.

And this is already a joke (there is no such thing in the release), and absolutely in vain. Pyrivodchegi! Read the book and the article! This one, for example:
An efficient chemical synthesis of nicotinamide riboside (NAR) and analogues (Bioorg Med Chem Lett. 2002). And, most likely, this is not the only effective method of synthesizing the miracle of the miraculous.
In general, we drink beer and hope that scientists will be able, unhurriedly hurrying, to conduct clinical studies, and if (quite likely) the benefits for humans are proven, pharmaceutical companies will quickly establish the production of another (not at all wonderful, but probably healthy) vitamin.
