Polymer coating eliminated the signs of skin aging

Oleg Lischuk, N+1 based on MIT materials: New material temporarily tightens skin

American scientists have developed an elastic polymer coating that mechanically resembles healthy young skin. With its help, the experiment successfully corrected the external signs of aging and moisturized the skin. The results of the work are published in the journal Nature Materials (Yu et al., An elastic second skin).

The staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and colleagues have created a cross-linked polymer layer (XPL) from a material with customizable properties (elasticity, contractility, adhesion, tensile strength and occlusion) based on polysiloxane. XPL is applied to the skin in liquid form and quickly hardens under the action of a platinum catalyst without heat or light treatment.

The resulting coating is transparent and invisible. It is resistant to washing and stays on the skin for a day. During the experiment, scientists have shown that at low tension (less than 40 percent), the coating retains the elastic properties of the skin, and that it is able to return to its original state after stretching by 250 percent (for the skin, this figure is about 180 percent).

The elastic properties of XPL turned out to be significantly better than those of silicone gel and polyurethane films used to close skin defects. Applying the polymer to 12 volunteers reduced their eye bags by an average of two points on a five-point scale. With vacuum tension of the forearm, the skin with XPL straightened to its initial state faster than without it. In addition, the coating protected the skin from drying more effectively than a premium moisturizer and petroleum jelly oil. No side effects were observed when using the polymer, it does not violate the sensitivity of the skin.

The researchers note that XPL can be used both in cosmetology to restore skin elasticity, and in the treatment of wounds and burns, as well as for drug therapy of dermatological diseases. It can also be adapted for long-term protection from solar ultraviolet radiation.
