The hunting season for fake nanotechnology is open

As part of the interaction of the Nanometer, NT-INFORM and Nanonewsnet sites and the Modern Natural Science Foundation, in the interests of popularizing the achievements of nanotechnology and debunking misinformation about them, an amateur photo contest "Don't believe your eyes ..." is announced by searching for unscientific or unscrupulous advertising of commercial products with the name "nano" (pseudoproducts).

Photo images, scanned copies of publications, screen shots of websites (own or found in printed publications, advertising of any type, educational, popular, fiction, pages of Internet sites, etc.) that meet the following criteria are accepted for the competition:
1. JPG file with a size of at least 300X400 pixels (without electronic processing except for changing contrast, brightness, clarity),
2. the photo must contain a real image, the text of an article, an advertisement or a previously published collage about a real or imaginary nanotechnology product (including materials, objects, devices or their components) with mandatory indication of the source of publication. If a publication or advertisement is sent to the Internet, along with a photo image (a screenshot of the site), a corresponding link and the date of discovery of the material on the network are sent),
3. the photo must necessarily be provided with an explanation consisting of two parts – the original advertisement of the "manufacturer" speculating on the prefix "nano", as well as your own explanations (as you understand it) why this advertisement is false, unscientific or (at best) inaccurate.

Members of the jury:
• Igor O. Temkin, Executive Director of the Foundation "Modern Natural Science", Doctor of Technical Sciences.
• Sirotina Irina Vyacheslavovna, Deputy. the head of "NT-INFORM", to Ph.D.
• Yuri Dmitrievich Pletner, Advisor to the General Director of the IT Company, member of the Editorial and Expert Council of NT-INFORM, Ph.D.
• Evgeny A. Gudilin, Faculty of Materials Sciences, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Doctor of Chemical Sciences.
• Ilya V. Goldt, Leading Specialist of the RUSNANO Expertise Department, Ph.D.
• Kurinny Alexander Nikolaevich, Deputy Chairman of the Commission on Nanotechnologies of the SUPPORT of Russia, head of the online information and analytical publication NanoNewsNet.ru , dir. dep. Internet Technologies, CB Uniastrum Bank (LLC), coordinator of joint projects with the Nanonews Network portal.

Applications for the competition are accepted through the Nanometer website. The organizers of the contest plan to actively expand cooperation, they intend to coordinate and systematically promote to a wide audience information about the most relevant events in the field of nanotechnology, promising educational, research and innovation projects and their teams, as well as projects aimed at increasing the interest of schoolchildren and young people in promising scientific and technological areas.

The partners' plans also include the organization of competitive programs of various formats and work to expand the circle of partners-co-organizers of competitions.

And these are typical samples of pseudoproducts: "nanotruses with biophotons" that have filled their teeth and nanostacks of a well–known charlatan company.
«...The nanomaterial from which the glass is made includes titanium anigdride and zinc oxide, as well as more than ten types of various trace elements... The main functions of the nanomaterial mug: nanomaterials, emitting infrared waves of the remote spectrum, causing nuclear magnetic resonance, transform macromolecules of water (consisting of 13-15 molecules) into micromolecules (of 5-7 molecules). Such water is called low molecular weight water all over the world and has 3 features: high solvent, splitting and metabolic action. The mug has a powerful bacteriostasis function, effectively destroys E. coli and Staphylococcus in water. At the same time, it reduces the content of harmful substances in water several times, such as lead, fluorine, when using such water, the body's immunity increases ..."
