Old people! Don't be afraid of sex!

Older people should not give up sex
Older adults' sexual desires don't have to fade

New studies of the sexual life of Americans aged 57 to 85 years have shown that older people not only do not need to give up sex, but, on the contrary, sexual activity helps them stay healthy and positive

According to new research, in the United States, about 40% of men who are between 75 and 85 years old have sex, and one in four of them have sex at least once a week (for women, the indicator in this age group is more modest – only 17%), writes The Los Angeles Times today.

For many decades, the author of the article writes, doctors politely avoided the issue of sex in nursing homes and masturbation among the elderly. Many doctors and patients themselves simply claimed that over the years, sex is fading away.

The results of a new study suggest another version: age itself does not affect our sex drive, rather the consequences of aging are to blame – health problems, side effects of medications and the absence of a partner. In other words, if we stay happy, healthy and sociable over the years, there is a good chance that we will be able to enjoy intimacy as much as we want. So, Dr. John Morley, a professor of geriatrics at St. Louis University, says that he himself made a penis prosthesis for a man at the age of 98 and he used it quite successfully until the age of 101.

"The shelf life of our bodies is increasing. 30 years ago, doctors considered people over 60 to be "old," says Morley, "now most of my patients are 80 and 90 years old."

It's all about modern medicine and nutrition, explains the journalist of the publication. If in 1900 the average life expectancy in the United States was 47 years, now it is 75 years for men and 80 for women. Now a person aged 65 can safely expect to live another two decades or so. Naturally, many people want to make up for those hours of sex that were "lost" earlier due to stressful work, crying children or fears of getting pregnant.

In 2004, Edward Laumann and a group of researchers from the University of Chicago began a large-scale study of the sexual life of "senior citizens", which in the United States include people aged 57 to 85 years. The final results should reveal current and future trends in this area. Two interim reports have already been published in American medical journals, the publication reports.
