The first serial prostheses named after Luke Skywalker were handed over to the hospital

The Pentagon's Defense Advanced Development Agency (DARPA), together with the American company Mobius Bionics, handed over the first two bionic prosthetic arms to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. DARPA claims that the new bionic prostheses are so far the only such devices in the United States that have been freely available and approved by the Medicines and Nutrients Control Commission (DARPA Provides Mobius Bionics LUKE Arms to Walter Reed – VM).

The development of a bionic prosthetic arm has been carried out by Mobius Bionics over the past five years by order of the Agency for Advanced Defense Developments. The Pentagon planned to include this device in medical insurance for military personnel; a new bionic prosthesis will be available to all military personnel who lost their upper limbs during combat operations. It is not yet known when exactly the first procedure for installing a prosthesis is planned for the patient.

The new device was named LUKE in honor of Luke Skywalker, one of the main characters in the Star Wars film series, who lost his arm in a battle with Darth Vader and received a high-tech prosthesis in return.

In addition, the abbreviation LUKE stands for Life Under Kinetic Evolution (life under kinetic evolution). The bionic arm attached to the remains of the shoulder is controlled by electromyographic electrodes. With their help, the controller reads muscle signals.

LUKE can convert a few signals into one of ten possible movements, including lifting the arm above the head, placing it behind the back, lifting and lowering objects with simultaneous bending of the elbow, grabbing and holding objects (and even fragile ones, for example, a chicken egg). With the help of a prosthesis, you can perform many everyday operations, including brushing teeth, zipping up a jacket or sweeping floors.

LUKE's bionic arm is protected from water and dust. The prosthesis is available in several sizes. Tests of the bionic device were carried out on more than a hundred people for more than ten thousand hours.

In June of this year, Open Bionics, a company specializing in the production of affordable 3D-printed prosthetic hands, announced that it intends to design and release the bionic arm of Adam Jensen (the main character of the Deus Ex series of computer games). The developers have already managed to create a prototype of a device with partial functionality.
