Scientists from the Sochi Institute of Medical Primatology (NII MP) have learned to induce an erection of the genital organ in monkeys using current: to "turn it on", just press the button on the remote control. Their research will help to cope with erectile dysfunction in men.

Erectile dysfunction is a common disorder that is usually caused by problems with the vascular system. It often develops in patients who have undergone surgery to remove the prostate. There are no exact world statistics on how many men suffer from this disorder today, but even approximate estimates are amazing. Some sources note that the prevalence of ED is about over 30% among men 18-40 years old. In 1995, American scientists predicted that by 2025, about 322 million men would suffer from erection problems.

Currently, researchers around the world are trying to solve the problem of erectile dysfunction. Russian scientists from the Institute of Medical Primatology managed to find a "cure" – electrical stimulation of the cavernous and genital nerve. Researchers implanted baboons with an implant with four electrodes: two on the cavernous nerves and two on the genital nerve. The first stimulate the swelling of the penis, the second – muscle contraction.

The size of the implant may vary depending on whether it has a rechargeable battery or a battery: with the latter, the implant will be smaller, its work will last for 7-10 years, said surgeon Roman Ovchinnikov, who is engaged in the research.

He also told where the monkeys are implanted:

– The monkey can not be stitched – she will start to pick them out. If she finds an implant under her skin, she starts chasing it – to the point that the implant moves to the other side or even gets through the skin. There were also such situations. The question is, where do we hide them? Under the aponeurosis of the rectus abdominis muscle, so that the monkey could feel the muscle, and what was under it – it would already be difficult to determine.

The full name of the study reads as follows: "The effectiveness and safety of the method of electrostimulation of the proerectile nerves to achieve an erection in men, as well as the treatment and prevention of erectile dysfunction in patients with localized prostate cancer (LVL) after radical prostatectomy (RPE)." The project was sponsored by Rosagroexport.

The Research Institute of Medical Primatology has conducted and is conducting many other important studies. In the laboratory of cardiac surgery, for example, they studied how transplanted heart valves take root in the monkey's body. This project was carried out jointly with colleagues from Germany.
