For the first time in Russia: ultrasound cures prostate cancer

In the FEFU Medical Center, tumors are removed by a unique method of HIFU therapy

Anna Leontieva, FEFUA new type of surgery has been added to the arsenal of high-tech care at the Medical Center of the Far Eastern Federal University on Russian Island.

Doctors began to remove benign and malignant prostate tumors using ultrasound. For the so-called HIFU therapy, the FEFU clinic has purchased a new generation Sonablate-500 device – so far the only one in the entire eastern part of Russia up to the Urals.

To launch a new type of surgery, Bogdan Siunov, a urologist at the medical center, completed an internship in London. Grigory Kovchenko, the head of the department from the Research Institute of Urology in Moscow, where a lot of experience in performing such interventions has been accumulated, came to Vladivostok, Russian Island for the second stage of training. Five patients with the appropriate diagnoses were selected to perform demonstration free operations at the FEFU Medical Center. Two of them were conducted by a visiting doctor, and the other three were performed by Bogdan Siunov under the supervision of a consultant.

– In urology, as in any other area of surgery, there is a tendency to minimize access. Over several centuries, there has been an evolution from huge traumatic incisions to minimal ones, and now we have moved to the stage when there are no incisions in principle," said Kirill Stegny, head of the Surgery Center of the FEFU Medical Center. – The method of HIFU therapy is that an ultrasound sensor is inserted into the rectum with the help of a special anoscope. Next, the doctor selects the necessary power of exposure to a pathologically malignant focus, and by focusing ultrasound waves, the complete destruction of the tumor occurs. The patient can be discharged from the hospital the next day.

HIFU (high–intensity focused ultrasound ablation) is an organ-preserving, completely non-invasive high-tech method of modern medicine without characteristic incisions, as a result of which there are no scars on the body, there is no risk of blood loss, and the patient returns to the normal rhythm of life within one or two days. This method has gained great popularity among patients and doctors in recent years and is widely used in the world's leading clinics. Indications for radical treatment of prostate cancer by HIFU therapy is a localized tumor with a low or medium degree of malignancy.
