How will we live without antibiotics?

What will happen when antibiotics become powerless?

BBCThe appearance of antibiotics in the forties of the last century revolutionized medicine.

But modern microbiologists fear that this revolution is coming to an end.

In Western hospital practice, there are increasingly reports of the appearance of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. One of the most common in British hospitals, for example, has become MRSA – a type of staphylococcus resistant to the antibiotic methicillin. The impossibility of effective treatment means that the health of weakened patients is at risk.

Many other bacteria are also causing concern. Microbiologists believe that a temporary solution is to strictly control the use of antibiotics in order to reduce the likelihood of drug–resistant bacteria.

Details are in the report of the editor of the scientific department of the Newsnight program Susan Watts.
