Lenses for dry eyes

"Smart" contact lenses have been developed

Japanese researchers have developed a new type of intelligent contact lenses that can prevent dry eyes. The "self-wetting" system maintains a layer of fluid between the contact lens and the eye using a new mechanism, the press service of Tohoku University reports.

Article by Kusama et al. Self‐Moisturizing Smart Contact Lens Employing Electroosmosis is published in the journal Advanced Materials Technologies.

Smart contact lenses are wearable devices that can improve a person's eyesight. They are also used in augmented reality technologies. One of the biggest problems with contact lenses is that they can cause "dry eye syndrome", which can lead to discomfort, as well as corneal wounds and inflammation.

To solve this important problem, researchers have developed a new mechanism that keeps the lens moist. The system uses electroosmotic flow (EOF), which causes fluid to flow when a voltage is applied to the charged surface of the lens. In this case, the current causes fluid to flow upward from the patient's "tear reservoir" located behind the lower eyelid to the surface of the eye.

The researchers also explored how wireless power supplies for contact lenses could be used. They tested two types of batteries: a magnesium-oxygen battery and an enzymatic fructose-oxygen fuel cell, which are known to be safe and non-toxic to living cells. The authors of the development have shown that the system can be successfully powered by these biobatterns, which can be installed directly on a charged contact lens.
