Platelets against female baldness
Researchers at Cairo University have demonstrated that intradermal administration of autologous plasma enriched with platelets is an effective and safe approach to the treatment of female pattern baldness.
The article by Abeer Attia Tawfik and Mai Abdel Raouf Osman The effect of autologous activated platelet-rich plasma injection on female pattern hair loss: A randomized placebo-controlled study is published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
The study involved 30 women aged 20-45 years who suffered from female-type baldness and had not received treatment for 3 months before being included in the study. In one area of the scalp, the women received intradermal injections of their own (autologous) platelet-rich blood plasma, while in another area of the scalp they were injected with a placebo saline solution. The course of therapy consisted of 4 weekly sessions. Monitoring of the condition of the participants' hair continued for 6 months after the last session.

The analysis of the density of the hair cover and the thickness of the hair, carried out using a computer scanner of the folliscope, demonstrated the existence of a statistically significant difference between the zone of administration of the experimental drug and the zone of administration of the placebo. In 25 participants (83%), the results of the hair pulling test were normalized – the average number of pulled hairs was 3. In the areas of administration of platelet-rich plasma, significant visible improvements in the density and quality of hair were observed, also noted by the women themselves. During the 6-month follow-up period, these changes persisted.
The authors believe that injections of platelet-rich plasma can be considered as an alternative approach to the treatment of female-type baldness, which involves minimal risks and does not require large financial costs.
