Wrinkles and heart

At the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology, a paper was presented according to which people with a large number of deep wrinkles on the forehead are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases and are more at risk of dying from them.

The risk of heart disease increases with age, but a healthy lifestyle and modern medicine can significantly mitigate the damage. The main task is to identify those at risk as early as possible and start prevention and treatment on time.

Classic risk factors, such as hypertension and high cholesterol, are often ignored – they are difficult to feel and impossible to see, so few people follow them for no reason.

The search for a visible marker that would allow predicting the risk of mortality from cardiovascular diseases has been going on for a long time. Facial wrinkles, baldness, xanthelasmas (cholesterol accumulations under the skin) have already been considered for this role. Some signs were associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases, but not with mortality from them.

During the study, which lasted 20 years, 3,200 healthy working people were under the supervision of doctors. The age of the participants at the start of the follow-up was 32, 42, 52 or 62 years. Before starting the study, wrinkles on the forehead of each participant were evaluated on a scale from zero to three, where zero meant no wrinkles, and three – multiple deep wrinkles.

During the test, 233 subjects died from various causes, of which 15.2% had a score of two or three, 6.6% – one, and 2.1% – zero. Based on these indicators, the scientists concluded that the wrinkles of the first level slightly increase the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, while with an assessment of 2 or 3, the risk increases 10-fold (adjusted for age, gender, blood pressure and other objective characteristics).

The relationship between the development of diseases and wrinkles is not yet clear. It is possible that the presence of multiple deep wrinkles is associated with atherosclerosis, which is the main cause of heart attacks and other heart problems.

Of course, the presence of deep wrinkles on the forehead is only an indirect sign, but this is enough to think about your health.
