Flu vaccines are not as effective as we are being told

American scientists called the flu vaccine a "waste of money"

KM.RUResearchers from the University of Minnesota published a report (Public health experts find urgent need for new influenza vaccines, "Health experts consider the development of new flu vaccines to be urgently needed" – VM), which states that the benefits of flu vaccines are over-hyped, especially for the elderly, reports the Daily Mail (Flu jabs are a 'waste of taxpayers' money', claim scientists who say the benefits have been over-hyped.

Journalists, of course, warmed up the scientific report and turned it to the reader with the most toasty side – VM).

In the course of their work, scientists have analyzed more than 12 thousand studies on the effectiveness and safety of influenza vaccines since 1930. They note in the final report that "although government officials claim that the vaccine protects 70 to 90 percent of the population, in reality this is not the case."

According to researchers, vaccination protects only 59 percent of the population aged 18 to 65 years, and for older people this figure is much lower. Scientists are sure that the Ministries of Health are wasting taxpayers' money on it.

It is the over-hype of the available vaccines, according to researchers from Minnesota, that keeps scientists from inventing new ones that will be much more effective.

"I have been a staunch supporter of vaccination in general, as well as flu vaccines in particular, for many years. And I still recommend using them as the best we have. However, we have over–advertised this vaccine and this hinders the creation of new, more advanced flu vaccines," says Professor Michael Osterholm, who participated in the study.

The first approved flu vaccines were developed in 1940 by the US military. The modern technology for obtaining an anti-influenza vaccine based on chicken eggs was created in the 1950s. Every year, the World Health Organization selects three strains of the virus for influenza vaccinations in the upcoming epidemic year.
