The government of St. Petersburg is satisfied with its concern for the elderly

Georgy Poltavchenko: almost half of St. Petersburg pensioners
works and benefits the city

"Petersburg Diary"At yesterday's meeting of the Government of St. Petersburg, the results of the implementation of the program "Improving the quality of life of elderly citizens in St. Petersburg" for 2011-2013 were summed up.

More than 1 million 317 thousand elderly people (25% of the total population) live in St. Petersburg today. There is an increase in life expectancy to more than 68 years for men and more than 77 years for women.

The average pension is regularly increased (from April 1 – 12,458 rubles). The city budget provides for additional social benefits.

Chairman of the Committee on Social Protection of the Population Alexander Rzhanenkov noted the achieved high level of provision of senior citizens with social services.

In complex centers, in accordance with the standards of social services, more than 500 thousand elderly residents of St. Petersburg receive services annually.

The provision of social and socio-medical services, home care is almost 100% of those in need. Nevertheless, the issue of shortage of places in inpatient institutions at the district and city levels remains relevant.

As of January 1, there are more than 600 people in the queue. According to Alexander Rzhanenkov, the measures planned by the city for major repairs, reconstruction, construction of new premises, including on the basis of public-private partnership, will allow to completely remove this problem within the next two years.

Positive results are noted in creating an accessible environment for low-mobility categories of the population, in expanding the opportunities for social integration of older citizens and in promoting the employment of St. Petersburg residents of retirement age.

Special attention is paid to the implementation of the program for the construction of social homes. As of today, 20 houses have already been inhabited in the city.

Three more houses – in Frunzensky, Nevsky and Petrodvorets districts – will appear by 2016. According to Vasily Volobuev, chairman of the Council of the St. Petersburg Public Organization of Veterans (Pensioners, Disabled People) of War, Labor, the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies, veterans and elderly people feel and appreciate the help of the city.

Vasily Volobuev drew attention to the condition of the premises of the hospital for war veterans and the clinical city hospital No. 46, which, according to patients, need urgent repair, as well as the situation with the holiday village of Solnechnoye.

In response to the request, Governor Georgy Poltavchenko instructed members of the government to carry out all necessary work to address these issues.

"The number of people over the working age is growing, and this is a positive indicator that indicates an improvement in the quality of life in the city as a whole.

Almost half of our pensioners work today and bring real benefits to the city, not to mention the benefits in educating the younger generation.

Therefore, we must continue to strive for this kind of work to be carried out with increasing results," Georgy Poltavchenko stressed.
