American researchers received $6.5 billion from pharmaceutical companies

The payment publicity program was launched simultaneously with the healthcare reform, which was nicknamed Obamacare and obliges all pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers of medical devices to report payments to doctors and clinics for services such as lectures on their products and research grants. In total, in 2014, 607 thousand doctors and more than 1,100 clinics at universities received 11.4 million payments for research and general expenses – transport, housing and food. 

The largest American pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer Inc has transferred more than $234.2 million for research and $53.3 million in total payments. John Diliberti from Illinois, who deals with child genetics, received about $447 thousand from Pfizer for consulting services – this is the largest amount that the company paid to one specialist.

British GlaxoSmithKline Plc spent $177.1 million on research and $36 million on general payments. Among medical device manufacturers, Boston Scientific Corp spent more on general payments – $26.3 million than on research – $18.4 million. Scientific developments cost Edwards Lifesciences Corp $ 44 million, and other expenses amounted to $6.8 million.

Amgen Inc, the largest biotech company, spent about $117 million on research and $23 million on other needs. The largest amount from the company was received by a genetics specialist from Michigan, Gilbert Omenn.

MD Anderson Cancer Center, the largest American cancer research center, received $92.7 million for research and $12.4 million for general expenses. Siemens Medical Solutions paid the most – $2.9 million as royalties or royalties.

Cleveland Clinic, one of the leading cardiac centers in the United States, earned $25.1 million on research. The clinic also received the largest amount – $1.2 million – from Siemens, Biogen Inc paid less – $941,311.

According to estimates, the average American doctor receives $1,700 from pharmaceutical companies as a reward.
