The American Working Group on Preventive Measures has issued a draft of new recommendations regarding aspirin intake.

The document says that taking aspirin daily in a small dosage for 10 years can help a group of people aged 50 to 60 years to prevent cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Experts note that the recommendations apply only to the group of patients who have a 10% increased chance of developing a stroke or heart attack. To assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases, those who wish can use a special calculator on the website of the American Association of Cardiology, writes The Washington Post.

At the same time, the authors of the document warn that to date, the effectiveness of taking aspirin for the prevention of CVD has not been proven in patients under the age of 50 and elderly people over 70 years old.

Aspirin has been used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases for 30 years, a large number of scientific studies have been devoted to its use in this area. According to scientific data, taking aspirin reduces the risk of myocardial infarction by 32%, the risk of nonfatal infarction by 34%, and the total risk of vascular complications by 22%. Despite this, doctors from different countries are still discussing the feasibility of using aspirin due to the fact that regular intake of the drug increases the risk of bleeding. In this regard, eight years ago, European countries updated the recommendations on taking aspirin for the prevention of CVD.
