Defeat obesity? Easy!

British scientists have proposed a new recipe for fighting obesity

People eat and drink soft drinks more (so in the text, and in the title of the article quite the opposite – VM) when they are offered large portions or put food and pour the drink into larger dishes. Avoiding large portions will reduce the number of calories consumed by 16 percent in the UK and by 29 percent in the US (among adults). This conclusion was reached by the authors of an article in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (Hollands et al., Portion, package or tableware size for changing selection and consumption of food, alcohol and tobacco – VM).

Scientists summarized data from 61 studies in which 6711 volunteers participated. It turned out that people always eat and drink more when they are offered large portions and served food and drinks in large dishes. Moreover, a significant reduction in access to large dishes would reduce daily calorie intake by 12-16 percent in the UK (by about 279 calories) and by 22-29 percent in the US (526 calories). This effect does not depend on gender, body mass index, degree of hunger and level of self-control, scientists say.

"Overeating and obesity are usually blamed on a person's personal qualities, but our findings point to the important role of the environment. Reducing the volume of portions, reducing the attractiveness of food and its availability in stores will help many reduce the risk of overeating," notes (in a press release from the University of Cambridge Larger–sized portions, packages and tableware lead to higher consumption of food and drink - VM) co-author of the study Gareth Hollands (Gareth Hollands).

The researchers propose a number of specific measures: to introduce a limit on the volume of dishes and drinks rich in calories served in cafes and restaurants (fatty foods, sweets, energy drinks), to move large portions away from the eyes of potential customers, visually highlight small portions with bright packaging and other means, as well as abandon the policy of relative cheapness of large portions.
