Dietary fiber will protect against stroke

Scientists have established a quantitative link between fiber and stroke risk

Copper newsEvery additional seven grams of dietary fiber reduces the risk of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke by seven percent, according to Medpage Today (Dietary Fiber Nibbles Down Stroke Risk).

The data were obtained by meta-analysis of electronic databases collected from January 1990 to May 2012 on eight cohorts of healthy people in the USA, northern Europe, Australia and Japan who met the study criteria. Scientists compared the amount of dietary fiber they consumed daily with the moment of the onset of the first stroke. It was found that it is inversely proportional to the risk of acute cerebrovascular accident.

The benefits of fiber consumption for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases have been discussed for a long time, but a group of British scientists led by Diane Threapleton from the University of Leeds for the first time received quantitative evidence of this. The results of the meta-analysis are presented in the online version of the journal Stroke (Dietary Fiber Intake and Risk of First Stroke. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis – VM).

It is assumed that dietary fiber prevents blockage of blood vessels by removing "bad" cholesterol from the bloodstream.

According to the data provided in the publication, currently the consumption of dietary fiber in the United States does not exceed 13 grams for women and 17 grams for men, whereas to reduce the risk of cerebral hemorrhage, women need from 21 to 25 grams of fiber per day, and men - from 30 to 38 grams.

"Soluble fiber types form a gel in the stomach and small intestine, which reduces the rate of absorption of nutrients and slows down gastric emptying. Thus, the feeling of satiety increases, which affects the total amount of food eaten and reduces the likelihood of gaining excess weight," the authors write. "Bacterial fermentation of starch and soluble fibers in the large intestine leads to the formation of short-chain fatty acids, which inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver," they explain.
