It's not coffee that ruins people

You should not drink more than 4 cups of coffee a day

ABC Magazine based on Alpha Galileo: More Than 28 Cups of Coffee a Week May Endanger Health in Under-55sThe results of a new study involving more than 40,000 people show that consuming more than 28 cups of coffee a week increases mortality by 50 percent among people under the age of 55.

At the same time, no such pattern has been revealed for older people. The results of the study are published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings (Liu et al., Association of Coffee Consumption With All-Cause and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality, in open access – VM).

Coffee consumption has become a daily habit of millions of people. In the USA alone, 400 million cups of this drink are consumed daily. More than 60 percent of Americans drink coffee every day, while drinking an average of 3 cups. Scientists have long said that the consumption of large amounts of coffee has a detrimental effect on health. The caffeine contained in it stimulates the release of adrenaline, slows down the activity of insulin and increases blood pressure. However, most studies of the effect of coffee consumption on mortality were conducted on small groups of participants, and their results were very contradictory.

To better study this influence, an international team of researchers analyzed data from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, which was conducted from 1979 to 1998. It was attended by about 45 thousand men and women aged 20 to 87 years. Throughout the study, participants filled out numerous questionnaires about their lifestyle (including coffee consumption), as well as their own medical history. For the current study, scientists selected questionnaires of 43,727 participants (33900 men and 9827 women). During the 17-year follow-up period, 2,512 deaths were registered among the participants (87.5% male and 12.5% female). 32 percent of these deaths were due to cardiovascular causes.

The results of the data analysis showed that men under the age of 55 who consume more than 28 cups of coffee a week have a 56 percent increased risk of early death from any cause. For women, this risk was increased by more than 2 (two!) times. No such dependence was found among people over 55 years of age. The researchers emphasize that young people should pay more attention to the number of cups of coffee they drink and try not to consume more than 4 cups a day.

Interestingly, excessive coffee consumption does not increase cardiovascular mortality, which suggests that the effect of caffeine on the heart and blood vessels is not the main risk factor. In part, the data obtained can be explained by the influence of unknown genetic factors, as well as by the fact that coffee drinkers, as a rule, are more likely to be smokers and have a low level of physical activity and intense nervous work.
