One hundred grams

A dose of alcohol exceeding one hundred grams per week was recognized as accelerating death

Previous studies have refuted the popular stereotype that small doses of alcohol have a positive effect on health. Now an international group of scientists has proved on an extensive sample that a weekly serving of pure alcohol exceeding one hundred grams increases the risk of mortality in the future.

A large-scale study published in the medical journal The Lancet covered 599,912 people. Scientists defined all of them as "drinkers". The data were taken from three databases: the UK biobank, the Cambridge University ERFC program and the European EPIC-CVD program dedicated to cancer and nutrition research. Less than half of the participants, 44 percent, are women, and 21 percent are smokers.

The researchers divided the questionnaires into groups depending on the dose of alcohol consumed per week. Those who drank more than a hundred grams accounted for 50 percent, and those who consumed more than 350 grams – eight percent. 40,310 people died from cardiovascular diseases, and 39,018 experienced the first signs of them. The researchers noticed a positive correlation between mortality and the amount of alcohol consumed. Based on this, they determined addiction for people aged 40. According to experts, drinking from 100 to 200 grams of alcohol per week reduces the estimated life expectancy by six months, from 200 to 350 grams – by one to two years, and over 350 grams – by four to five years.

Tim Chico, Professor of cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Sheffield, who was not involved in the work, commented on the results:

"This study clearly shows that drinking alcohol does not bring any benefits to the body, unlike common prejudices – they are too good to be true."

Last year, American researchers conducted an unusual experiment that demonstrated how alcohol transforms a human personality. Experience has shown that drunk people's perception of themselves changes a lot. For example, they thought they had become less responsible, but more open to new experiences.
