American scientists have found that regular consumption of excessive amounts of salt provokes changes in the immune system in the intestine, which entail degradation of human cognitive functions. The corresponding study is published in Nature Neuroscience (Faraco et al., Dietary salt promotes neurovascular and cognitive dysfunction through a gut-initiated TH17 response).

Experts have shown that the abuse of sodium chloride for three weeks leads to endothelial dysfunction, a decrease in cerebral blood flow and cognitive impairment, but does not change blood pressure.

A high-salt diet increased the number of T helper 17 cells in the intestine and their production of interleukin-17 molecules. The authors showed that an increase in the content of interleukin-17 in the bloodstream caused a negative effect of this diet on cerebral circulation.

Scientists came to similar conclusions during observations of mice. The results obtained, the authors note, are also true for people. Experts noticed that the negative consequences of a high-salt diet allowed for cancellation in the event of rodents returning to a normal diet.

The World Health Organization recommends consuming no more than five grams of salt per day. It is noted that reducing salt intake to five grams per day by each person can prevent approximately 2.5 million deaths annually.

According to the organization, more than half of the world's inhabitants consume 80-140 percent more sodium chloride every day. Excess salt enters the human body mainly together with bread, breakfast cereals and ready-to-eat dishes.
