Stroke prevention: more tomatoes!

Tomatoes will save you from a stroke

ABC MagazineAccording to a publication in the journal Neurology (Serum lycopene reduces the risk of stroke in men: a population-based follow-up study), a high content of the antioxidant lycopene in the blood significantly reduces the risk of stroke.

This antioxidant can enter the body with food, especially a lot of it is contained in tomatoes.

The study conducted in Finland involved 1,031 men aged 46 to 65 years. Observation of the participants, including monitoring of the content of antioxidant substances in their blood, continued for 12 years. During the study period, 67 of its participants experienced a stroke.

In a group of 258 men with a low content of lycopene in the blood, 25 people had a stroke, and in a group of 259 people with a high content of lycopene, only 11 people had a stroke. Thus, it was found that the high content of lycopene in the blood reduces the likelihood of stroke by 55%. At the same time, the probability of ischemic stroke in people with high concentrations of lycopene is 59% lower than in people with low concentrations.

In the same study, the relationship of stroke risk with the content of substances such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol in the blood of patients was assessed. However, despite a significant number of publications testifying to the ability of these substances to reduce the risk of stroke, no such effect was noted in this study.

According to the author of the study, Joanie Karppi, his work once again confirms that daily consumption of vegetables and fruits significantly reduces the risk of stroke. Scientists believe that if people start, following the recommendations of nutritionists, to consume 5 servings of vegetables or fruits a day, the number of strokes worldwide will be significantly reduced.
