The Ministry of Health warns not in vain

Anti-smoking measures will prevent 7.4 million deaths by 2050

Copper newsMeasures to combat smoking, which were taken in 41 countries between 2007 and 2010, will help prevent about 7.4 million premature deaths by 2050, according to the World Health Organization.

These measures include monitoring tobacco smoking statistics and its prevention, protecting citizens from passive smoking, helping those who want to quit, warning the population about the dangers of smoking, as well as tightening bans on cigarette advertising and increasing excise taxes.

The study involved countries in which the fight against tobacco smoking, according to WHO estimates, was particularly successful. In total, there were 290 million smokers per 6.8 billion inhabitants in these countries. Meanwhile, out of the total number of countries that have begun to implement these measures, 33 have adopted only one item, and only the remaining eight have decided to try more than one measure.

"It was an amazing discovery for us – that through the use of such simple strategies, governments of countries will be able to save so many lives," comments Dr. David Levy, a leading researcher, professor of oncology at the Georgetown Cancer Center in Washington.

Recall that at the beginning of the year, a resonant anti-smoking law was adopted in Russia, introducing new restrictions on smoking, the sale and advertising of tobacco. Its first rules came into force on June 1, but the system of fines for violations has not yet been worked out.
