Weight loss – reducing the risk of cancer

Losing weight can protect against endometrial cancer

ABC Magazine based on MedPageToday: Can Weight Loss Cut Cancer Risk?In overweight and obese women who are at risk for developing endometrial cancer, the concentration of oncological biomarkers and markers of inflammation significantly decreases after surgical weight correction.

In 3 cases, after surgery, even the restoration of the normal functioning of the endometrium was observed. This was reported by researchers at the conference of the American Association for Cancer Research (American Association for Cancer Research).

The research of scientists is especially important against the background of the obesity epidemic in the United States, which has led to an increase in cancer incidence. This may be due to the fact that chronic systemic inflammation accompanying obesity can stimulate atypical cell proliferation. Among the forms of cancer dependent on obesity, endometrial cancer is the most severe. However, it has not yet been studied whether weight loss can reduce the risk of developing this disease. In order to answer this question, Faina Linkov from the University of Pittsburgh and her colleagues compared endometrial biopsies of obese patients before bariatric surgery and 1 year after it.

(Bariatric operations include gastric banding, gastroplasty and gastric bypass; liposuction and abdominoplasty are not bariatric operations and are not used for weight loss purposes - VM.)

The researchers evaluated the number of estrogen, progesterone and androgen receptors, the Ki-67 biomarker, and CD3 and CD20 immune response activators.

59 patients participated in the study, their average age was 42 years, average weight – 127 kg, average body mass index – 46.8. 1 year after bariatric surgery, against the background of a noticeable weight loss, the expression of hormonal receptors and CD20 cells significantly decreased in all patients, and less significantly - the production of CD3 cells and the biomarker Ki-67. Moreover, before the operation, four women had endometrial cell hyperplasia. 1 year after the operation, hyperplasia ceased to be diagnosed in two patients, and 2 years after the operation – in three.

Linkov and her colleagues conducted another study, which involved 68 obese patients (18 of them men) who used different methods to reduce their weight. During one year of follow–up, the average weight of the participants decreased from 105 to 78 kg, and the body mass index - from 33 to 27-28. The results of the blood serum analysis of the participants before and after weight loss showed a significant decrease in the concentration of C-reactive protein, C-peptide, insulin-like growth factor 2, insulin, plasminogen activator inhibitor and soluble E-selectin. All these substances support chronic inflammation and can provoke the development of cancer. Therefore, the authors of the study urge gynecological oncologists and bariatric surgeons to cooperate closely.
