An Australian man received a kidney from his wife as a Valentine's Day gift. This is reported by ABC News (This Valentine's Day, Maureen gave David a gift with a difference – a kidney).

In 2005, David Santamaria was diagnosed with a rare disease – IgA nephritis. In March last year, doctors warned the man that his kidney failure had reached the stage at which either kidney transplantation or dialysis was necessary.

His wife Maureen, who has lived with him for 40 years, volunteered to help. After tests, which took nine months, the operation was approved. On Tuesday, February 13, one of her kidneys was removed and transplanted to David 20 minutes later.

The Australian admitted to reporters that he finds it difficult to choose a return gift. He hopes to go abroad with his wife after his recovery. "She always wanted to see the Canadian Rockies. Now this is an option," the man said.

In 2017, it was reported that the Italian donated his kidney to his beloved on the eve of March 8.
