Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of Economic Development to submit a special coordination program for the development of biotechnologies by mid-May.

"We need to accelerate the development of a special coordination program for the development of biotechnologies in Russia, I ask the Ministry of Economic Development to submit its agreed draft to the government no later than mid–May," Putin said at a meeting of the government commission on high technologies and innovations.

According to the Prime Minister, today Russia accounts for less than 0.2% of the turnover of the global biological market. "Our task is to change this situation, to create conditions for the formation of a powerful bioindustry sector in Russia," Putin said. He noted that the necessary educational and research base is available for this.

"It is necessary to conduct a detailed inventory in the industry, develop measures to stimulate demand for Russian biotechnological products, remove unnecessary administrative barriers that often prevent entrepreneurs from working," the head of government said.

He added that it is necessary to ensure the coordination of R&D and research by consolidating the resources and capabilities of state academies, federal and departmental targeted programs, as well as federal, regional and corporate research centers.
