Antibiotics – resign! They will be replaced by natural substances

Specialists of the Protein Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Krasnoyarsk State University have created substances that can replace antibiotics.

Even scientists are amazed at how quickly bacteria adapt to seemingly the most sophisticated antibiotics. It takes many years to create these drugs, a lot of money is spent, and the microbe needs very little time to find its "antidote" against it. Bacteria have already been born that neither penicillins, nor tetracyclines, nor sulfamide preparations take.

But nature has created hundreds of peptides that have been perfectly protecting plants and animals for many millions of years. They kill bacteria quickly and efficiently. The most important thing is that pathogens cannot acquire resistance to such peptides. The principle of their action is based on the difference in the structure of the cell membranes of bacteria and higher organisms, and therefore antimicrobial peptides are a universal remedy.

Studying peptides, Russian scientists have discovered certain patterns in their structure. Scientists synthesized several branched sequences of peptides and tested them on E. coli cells. It turned out that the strength of the effect on the bacterium increases with an increase in the "bushiness" of the substance, and the most branched ones are not inferior in activity to such natural antimicrobial peptides as temporin, secreted by the skin cells of the grass frog, and magainin, obtained from the skin of the African spur frog. It can be said that Russian scientists have received a new class of antimicrobial compounds with high activity and non-toxic.
