Caution: Silicone!

Silicone injections cause irreparable harm to healthVictoria Lisitsina, GZT.RU

Over the past year, American doctors have been examining more and more patients who come with complications after silicone injections.

In March 2009, a resident of America decided to undergo a procedure of silicone injections for rejuvenation, which a cosmetologist who came to her house did. The day after the procedure, a 43-year-old woman died from a silicone vascular embolism.

Representatives of the US Department of Health believe that this case may not be an isolated one, since cosmetologists are afraid to tell the authorities about the health problems of their patients due to the ban on such operations, and silicone itself cannot be detected using X-rays or computed tomography – in this case, only a biopsy helps.

Despite the danger of the procedure, the demand for silicone injections has never fallen: they are much cheaper than injections of botox or collagen. According to The International Herald Tribune, silicone can be used in cosmetology and plastic surgery only in rare cases, for example, in implants, from where it cannot leak out. Any introduction of liquid silicone is life-threatening.  When silicone enters a vein, it enters the bloodstream, which inevitably leads to death. In addition, subcutaneous injection of silicone can cause an allergic reaction, disorders of the immune system and disfigure the patient's body and face.

After the information about the lethal outcome from silicone injections, the US Food and Drug Administration launched an investigation into the case. The inspectors studied the "black market" of silicone cosmetology and found out that Latinos and transvestites who cannot afford more expensive and safe procedures from professionals most often resort to such "cheap" services.  Usually, such injections are done at home, in hotel rooms or at "silicone parties", the participants of which inject each other with a dangerous drug.

Doctors hope that sad consequences can be avoided by conducting information campaigns among the population, for example, telling that silicone for injections is bought on computer markets, but sometimes scammers replace it with cheaper means – castor and mineral oils, petroleum jelly and even transmission fluid for cars.
